ISHS Acta Horticulturae 586: IV International Symposium on Olive Growing

SELECTION ON OLIVE PROGENIES BASED ON EARLINESS OF BEARING AND FRUIT OIL CONTENT

Authors:   L. León, L. Rallo
Keywords:   olive, cross breeding, juvenile phase, earliness of bearing, oil content.
Abstract:
The initial results of a breeding program are reported. During four years we have evaluated progenies from reciprocal crosses between the cultivars ‘Arbequina’, ‘Frantoio’ and ‘Picual’ for earliness of bearing, crop , and oil fruit components (high oil yield). High variability of the progenies and influence of the female genitor represent a very promising base to breed new olive varieties. Some valuable selections have resulted from these initial crosses. This schedule of forced growth and the selection of the genitor reduced drastically the juvenile phase and therefore the intergenerational period.
