Abstract:
A breeding program on olive has been carried on at Florence since 1971 with the aim of obtaining new table olive cultivars, not disregarding their utility for oil extraction. Among the 127 genetic combinations obtained by crossing 12 table and 5 oil cultivars for a total amount of over 5,000 seedling, we refer about the progeny of "Picholine x Grossanne" represented by 111 seedlings.
The observations carried on them showed that the combining ability of "Picholine x Grossanne" was quite interesting taking into account the fruit size; furthermore a high percentage of seedlings presented elliptical and oval shape, purple coloured skin and yellow coloured flesh of the drupes. Most of seedlings showed elliptical or elongated stones.
Among the 111 seedlings analysed, ten selections valuable mainly for drupe traits have been identified. During 1994-98 data about vegetative, productive and fruit characteristics were collected for all selections of the "Picholine x Grossanne" combination; some of them outstanding for the observed traits.
