Abstract:
Several agronomic and commercial characteristics of ten Mediterranean olive cultivars were analyzed in the northeast of Spain (Reus, Tarragona). The trial under non-irrigated conditions was planted in 1988. The main agronomic observations were carried out during an eleven year period (1989-1999) and the fruit characteristics for a four year period (1996-1999). 'Arbequina', 'Leccino' and ‘Picholine’ cultivars have got a productive behaviour clearly superior to the other varieties.
Cumulated yields were the highest in ‘Arbequina’ (242 kg/tree) followed by ‘Leccino’ (241 kg/tree), ‘Picholine’ (229 kg/tree), ‘Blanqueta de Elvas’ (217 kg/tree) and ‘Manzanilla de Sevilla’ (152 kg/tree). 'Carolea' trees produced the largest fruits (average fruit weight 4.4 g), while ‘Koroneiki’ produced the smallest fruits (0.8 g). The oil content, expressed as % on dry basis, was the highest in ‘Carolea’ (53.3 %) and the lowest in ‘Marocan Picholine’ (46.9 %).
