COMBINING DIFFERENT GROWING TECHNIQUES FOR ALL YEAR ROUND RED RASPBERRY PRODUCTION IN PORTUGAL

Abstract:
This article reviews the various methods frequently used for off-season red raspberry production in mild winter climates based on our own experience and on procedures used by other researchers. Six systems were evaluated, according to the expected season, using open-field and non-heated greenhouse cultivation:
System A - long canes of tip-primocane and primocane-fruiting cultivars lifted from the field in August, cold stored for one month at 4º C (±2º C), and planted out in a greenhouse on September 15
System B - long canes of summer-fruiting varieties lifted during October and November, cold stored for one and half month at 4º C (±2º C), and planted out in a greenhouse on January 01
System C - regular open-field production of summer-fruiting cultivars
System D - regular open-field production of primocane-fruiting cultivars
System E - manipulation of the growing cycle of autumn-fruiting cultivars grown under greenhouse, using different summer-pruning dates and intensities
System F - Roots of autumn-fruiting cultivars dug in January frozen at –2º C for six months and planted out in a greenhouse at beginning of July.
The production season can be expected from January to March in system A; April to June in system B; June to August in system C; August to October in system D and October to December in systems E and F. Different cultivars within the same system enable the spreading of the production period. There were differences in fruit yield and berry size between the systems but all of them were profitable. The combination of various cultivars and systems with open-field and greenhouse cultivation allowed an all year round supply of red raspberries from Southwest Portugal.
