Abstract:
Calypso®, proposed common name thiacloprid, is a novel and highly active chloronicotinyl insecticide with broad spectrum efficacy against sucking and biting insects at 48-180 g a.i./ha depending on crop and pest.
Five years of field studies have revealed excellent control of important pests in fruit, cotton, vegetables, and potatoes.
Besides aphids and whiteflies it is also active against various species of beetles and lepidoptera, such as leaf miners, codling moth and oriental fruit moth and shows good plant compatibility in all relevant crops.
Special indications for use in berry fruit crops are Lygus sp., aphids, leafminers, scales, weevils and Byturus tomentosus. Like imidacloprid, thiacloprid acts agonistically on the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor.
As a result there is no cross-resistance to conventional insecticides such as the pyrethroids, organophosphates and carbamates and consequently it fits well in resistance management strategies.
Calypso® is an acute contact and stomach insecticide with systemic properties.
It has a favourable environmental profile with a short half-life in soil, and good margins of safety for birds, fish species and many beneficial arthropods.
Its safety to bees allows application during the blossom period of crops.
The active ingredient of Calypso® is classified as low toxic, not irritating, not sensitising and has no neurotoxic, mutagenic or teratogenic potential.
