Abstract:
Ribes culture in Argentinean Patagonia, as Ribes nigrum, is still incipient, and consequently there is a lack of information about the growth and fruiting of Ribes species in this region. The objective of this work was to evaluate the growth and fruiting of three varieties of Ribes nigrum L. ('Rosenthals', 'Titania' and 'Silvergieters') in Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, from establishment until the fifth growing season. The growing season, variety and block factors affected the growth and fruiting. Shoot number with length less than 10 cm and length between 10 to 30 cm were maximal during the fourth and fifth growing seasons, while shoot number greater than 30 cm and total shoot number attained the highest values during the fourth growing season in the varieties 'Titania' and 'Rosenthals'. Shoot number with length greater than 30 cm was maximum in the block most protected from the dominant winds. By the end of the fifth growing season, the total shoot number per plant was 48, of which 28% were lower than 10 cm, 45% were between 10 and 30 cm and 27% were longer than 30 cm. Fruit yield was highest in the second and third harvests, attaining values of 726.8 and 611.3 g per plant, respectively, and in the block most protected from the dominant winds. Considering the four harvests, the variety 'Titania' had the largest yield, with 556.7 g per plant. The variety 'Rosenthals', however, produced more fruits in the first years, attaining a yield of 8637 kg/ha in the best block during the second harvest. These results showed that in studies to date the Ribes species has shown good adaptability to this region. Further long-term studies are required.
