Abstract:
Blackcurrant is the second largest berry crop grown in Latvia after strawberries.
Local climatic conditions require an accurate choice of well adapted cultivars for commercial production.
Between 1994-1999, 39 black currant (Ribes nigrum L.) cultivars were evaluated for phenological traits, winter hardiness, yield and fruit quality, and resistance to diseases in the field collection at the Pūre Horticultural Research Station, Latvia.
Many cultivars were found to be of commercial and breeding importance, particularly 'Katyuscha', 'Seyanec Golubki', 'Naslednica', 'Nesravnennaya', 'Shirayevskaya', 'Birulovskaya', 'Vitaminnaya Rannaya', 'Kosmicheskaya' and 'Zagadka'.
