Abstract:
Boysen’ and ‘Marion’ have been adopted widely by processors and have become the international standards for commerce.
Attempts to breed new cultivars of these types of hybridberry/trailing blackberry types have been a challenge to breeders as the diversity of progenies derived from these parents and elite breeding lines has been enormous.
Several strategies for breeding new cultivars are explored and the objectives for improved types are defined.
Main improvements desired are genetic spinelessness, improved fruit firmness and ease of removal, especially with ‘Boysen’, resistance to environmental challenges (too cold or too warm in winter) and resistance to pests and disease, while maintaining the unique flavour and processed characteristics of ‘Marion’ and ‘Boysen’.
