AUSTRALIA'S RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

Author:   L. Baxter
Keywords:   horticulture, agriculture
Abstract:
Horticulture Australia is a new entity formed by the merging of Australian Horticultural Corporation (AHC) the Horticultural Research and Development Cor-poration (HRDC). The new company is responsible for developing market driven re-search and development and marketing programs. The R&D mechanism that is pro-vided by Horticulture Australia focuses on the adoption and application of knowledge in the fields of science, technology, marketing and economics. Projects that are brokered and managed on behalf of industry are funded either through statutory or voluntary levies or through voluntary contributions. The Australian Government matches these funds on a dollar for dollar basis. The primary function of the R&D program is to enhance the Australian horticultural industry. The structure and framework of the programs is based on meeting industry and government priorities across the entire value chain of horticulture. This is reflected in the strategic plan for the company, which addresses 6 key result areas: (1) market requirements and opportunities; (2) product development; (3) production; (4) product to end user; (5) industry develop-ment; and (6) product promotion.
