Abstract:
One of the largest collections of cactus pear is located in Sardinia, where fifty-six genotypes selected from Italian germplasm are under evaluation since 1993. They were characterized based on the Opuntia descriptor list.
The objective is to develop new varieties with high yield and fruit quality.
The main pomological and horticultural characters of fourteen genotypes are described.
Ten accessions were selected within the Sardinian germplasm and four were introduced from Sicily, where they are commercially grown.
Selection was based on plant vigor, fruit yield, resistance to adverse environmental conditions, as well as fruit traits.
