ISHS Acta Horticulturae 580: IV International ISHS Symposium on Artificial Lighting

PREFACE

Authors:   A. Gosselin, M. Dorais
Abstract:
FOREWORD
The 4th international symposium on artificial lighting was organized in November 2000 in Québec City, Québec, Canada. The successful symposium gathered around 100 participants from European, Asian and American countries. It involved not only scientists, but also manufacturers, crop advisors and advanced growers.
The scientific committee designed a symposium with 5 different sessions : The first one dealt with the latest developments in horticulture lighting technologies across the world. In sessions 2, we discussed the effects of artificial lighting on plant physiology, while new equipments and technologies were presented in session 3. Light quality was the main theme of session 4, while plant preparation and growth of tissue-culture plantlets under artificial lighting were discussed in the final sessions. Professor Hugo Challa from The Netherlands and Professor Ted Tibbits from the United States of America made the concluding remarks.
Thanks to the organizing committee, participants could visit commercial greenhouses of tomato, lettuce and flowers using artificial lighting as well as the experimental greenhouses at Université Laval. Social events included a visit of Québec City and the surrounding area as well as folk songs and music.
We express our sincere thanks to the editorial board and all the referees who have generously offered their time and expertise for the improvement of the quality of this Acta Horticulturae.
Representatives of Scandinavia agreed on the principle of organizing the 5th international symposium on artificial lighting.
