INVESTIGATION ON RESISTANCE OF WILD SPECIES AND CULTIVARS OF TOMATO TO CORYNEBACTERIUM MICHIGANENSE (SMITH) JENSEN UNDER GREENHOUSE CONDITIONS

Authors:   V. SOTIROVA, L. BELEVA
Abstract:
Bacterial wilt in tomato caused by Corynebacterium michiganense (Smith) Jensen leads to great losses in tomato production both under greenhouse and field conditions. The agrotechnical measures for control of bacterial wilt are labour consuming and not effective enough. The most reliable means for control and not effective enough. The most reliable means for control of this disease is the development and introduction into production of resistant and tolerant tomato cultivars. The wild species of Lycopersicon genus prove to be a valuable source of resistance. The available information on the resistance of wild species to Corynebacterium michiganense is insufficient. Data on the resistance of L. pimpinellifolium (Thyr B.D. 1968, 1969, 1971; Hassan A.A., D,K, Strider, T.R. Konsiler 1968; Strider L.D. 1969, 1970, Vatigina K.N. 1951; Elenkov E. 1965, etc.) are reported in the literature. Single studies have been made on the resistance of L. hirsutum typicum (Thyr B.D. 1968).

The aim of the present investigation was to study the resistance of a large number of wild species and cultivars of tomato under our conditions in order to find new sources of resistance which could be used as an initial material in breeding for development of resistant lines and cultivars.
