TECHNOLOGY FOR IMPROVING UNSUITABLE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF SOILS IN THE ISALNITA-DOLJ GLASSHOUSE ENTERPRISE

Authors:   S.P. BALAN, V. SANDU, N. CAPTALAN
Abstract:
The Isalnita-Dolj glasshouse complex is located on the lower terrace and the bottom land of the Jiu river at about 15 km north of the Craiova municipality.

The soil mantle within the territory of this large and modern glasshouse complex is represented by: dark brown clayey soils, a alluvial semigley dark brown clayey soils, slightly developed colluvial-alluvial loamy and clay-loamy soils, alluvial semigley loamy and clayey soils, etc. These soils are characterized by unsuitable physical properties due to the texture, total and aeration porosity, permeability, compaction, tillage resistance, etc., and by generally high groundwater table, needing land reclamation.

Research works for improving these soils were carried out under the laboratory conditions (simulated conditions) and in the field (glasshouse).

This paper deals with the results of the research concerning the possibilities of improving the soils within this complex by adding sand and sand plus peat, as well as with the production results obtained with tomato crop in 1973. The research intended to clear out, under both laboratory and field and field conditions, if a permanent improvement of physical properties could, be obtained by adding sand, industrial ashes, peat or other materials, and if these treatments could adversely affect other soil properties as waterholding capacity of soil, etc. The economic efficiency of these tretments has also been considered.
