| Abstract:
The ultimate aim of modern agriculture – considerably expanded by a complex of factors generated by the world economic crisis – is to achieve maximum efficient productivity per unit of area, being thus able to meet the ever increasing consumers' requirements. This aspect of large production achievements is an essential one when high investments are being made – in glasshouses for instance. Gallaway wrote at the beginning of our century: “now is the time to view the erection of glasshouses and hotbed cultivation of plants in the same light as the development of craftsmanship into industry and the setting up of big factories, in other words, nowadyas the construction of a modern glasshouse can be compared, from many standpoints, to a factory that turns to account the natural forces, despite the succession of seasons, its final target being maximum crops”. In his days Gallaway's ideas were astonishingly, realistic and now, more than 70 years later, they have been confirmed in our country. Indeed this sector of Romania's agriculture, encompassing more than 1,000 hectares, is expected to double before long, the 10 to 200 ha glasshouses assuming a truly industrial character. The expansion of glasshouse areas is a world-scale trend, particularly in the XXth century: over the last twenty years (1950–1970) the area grew from 10,000 ha to more than 50,000 ha, an average annual growth of 10–15 p.c. | |
