ISHS Acta Horticulturae 58: International Symposium on Vegetable Crops under Glass Protection

IMPROVEMENTS OF TOMATOE RESISTANCE TO BACTERIAL CANKER, PROSPECTS

Authors:   M. ECHERT, V. POLI, V. SEVERIN
Abstract:
Bacterial canker may cause high losses in greenhouse grown tomatoes; sometimes even, the entire crop may be destroyed. As traditional chemical or physical control methods are not 100 percent efficient, varieties with high natural tolerance and resistance to this disease should be created.

Mortality percentages of several tomatoes varieties and of selected lines or with Lycopersicon species were compared after innoculation with Corynebacterium michiganense (Smith) Jensen.

Prototypes of C. michiganense, artificial infestation methods and environmental conditions were considered when selectiong individuals with natural resistance.

Infestation methods included:

  • Picking of the basal leaf, and application of the inoculum on the wound.
  • Injection of inoculum at the level of the basal aheath.
