Abstract:
In Western-Europe the market for vegetables is saturated during nearly the whole year (Jacobs and Meyaard, 1975). This is true especially for the main products of the glasshouse industry namely tomato, cucumbers and lettuce.
This market situation forces research workers into two directions viz:
- To study the possibility of producing other crops in glasshouses.
This opens the possibility of decreasing the area of the main crops and increases the flexibility of the growers.
- To decrease the production costs per unit of the product.
An efficient way to reach this goal is an increase of the yield per m2.
