GREENHOUSE GROWING OF DRY-SEED AND SNAP BEAN PHASEOLUS VULGARISS): INDICATIONS AND PROSPECTS

Authors:   F. SALAMINI, A. ALLAVENA
Abstract:
Bean crops grown for seed in greenhouses may be enhanced if new varieties are released having regard to their destination. Within the framework of the research on genotypes for greenhouse growing, work has been started on a small-leaved mutant.

The glossy mutant was isolated after treating Royal Red varieties with EMS. During the greenhouse experiment, plants that were homozygous for this mutation were compared to normal plants of the same variety. Starting with the time of blooming, a sample of seven plants was drawn from each subplot of the three replications in order to determine several morphological and metabolic indices.

Although the grain (G) and dry matter (DM) yields are lower in the glossy mutant, the G/LAD and DM/LAD ratios are higher. On this basis, it may be possible to restore fertility by increasing the LAI through a heavier rate of planting in which the mutant phenotype appears to fit quite well.
