EFFECTS OF LIGHT INTENSITY DURING GROWTH OF GREENHOUSE TOMATOES ON PHOTOSYNTHETIC RATE

Abstract:
Tomato seedlings were grown for 21 days under optimum light conditions and then transferred to growth chambers for 70 days. During this period the plants were exposed to two light intensities i.e. 3 and 6 klux for a 9-hour photoperiod. The temperature in the growth chambers was 18°C during the day 14°C during the night.

The plants grown at 3 klux made better use of the light up to 6 klux and attained the maximum level of net photosynthesis at 9—10 klux. The plants grown at 6 klux made better use of light intensities higher than 9 klux. The tomato hybrids under study showed good adaptibility to either 3 or 6 klux for a 9-hour photoperiod and this is very important for their growing during winter months.
