Abstract:
The experiment was conducted in Fier in three locations during 1999, with the melon Polycarp (F1) variety, Galia type, in vertical culture.
Seeds were sown into polystyrene containers on February 10th, and seedlings were planted in PVC greenhouses on March 20th. Spacing was 1.2 m between rows and 0.5 m between plants (1.66 plants/ m2). Through fruit thinning, 5 fruits per each plant were left, except in the control.
The harvest started on June 12th and it ended on July 27th. Five pruning methods were studied.
The results showed that the pruning method according to which two side shoots, tied separately as a V letter, resulted in a significant increase in the marketable yield and the corresponding income, compared to all other treatments.
The pruning methods have not showed significant differences regarding the average weight of fruits and the refractive index of the flesh.
