EFFECT OF PRODUCTION METHOD ON EARLINESS AND YIELD OF ALLIUM FISTULOSUM L.

Authors:   B. Lazic, V. Todorovic, M. Dardic
Keywords:   Production, earliness, yield, Allium fistulosum L.
Abstract:
Onions take an important place in the provision of fresh vegetables in the course of winter and early spring. Among the less widely grown onions, Allium fistulosum L. (Sect. cepa Miller) stands out on account of intensive growth and a high biochemical quality of vitamin C and other bioactive substances (the same composition of etheric oils as the common onion), with high antioxidant properties. Alium fistulosum was grown in an unheated plastic tunnel, directly from seed and from transplants (sowing on 15 August, transplanting on 5 October), using the silver-skin onion grown from standard-size sets (0.8-2.2 cm) as the control. After 90 days, the directly sown A. fistulosum had the highest mass (17.8 g) and the largest pseudostem (1.5 cm in diameter, 9.2 cm in length). The results fully justify the direct sowing of A. fisulosum in unheated plastic tunnels for winter consumption of young onions possessing high nutritional value.
