SCREENING OF THREE STRAWBERRY CULTIVARS FOR THEIR OZONE SENSITIVITY

Authors:   P.D. Drogoudi, M.R. Ashmore
Keywords:   Fragaria x ananassa, ozone, stomatal conductance, photosynthetic rate
Abstract:
The objective of this study was to investigate the physiological response and evaluate the relative resistance of three commercial strawberry cultivars (Fragaria x ananassa Duch. cvs Bogota, Cambridge Favorite and Elsanta) to ozone. Leaf gas-exchange characteristics and growth parameters were monitored in plants grown in greenhouse chambers, exposed to 85ppb ozone (8 h day-1) or filtered air for 40 days. In cvs Bogota and Cambridge Favorite, ozone reduced significantly the net photosynthetic rate after 22 days of fumigation, whereas it slightly reduced stomatal conductance, measured at light saturation and on a diurnal basis. Plant biomass was negatively affected by ozone fumigation. In cv. Elsanta, ozone did not significantly affect all the measured parameters, this cv. being the most resistant to ozone in respect to gas-exchange and vegetative growth. The differential response to ozone of cvs. Bogota and Elsanta was consistent with the lower inherited stomatal conductance and lower specific leaf area ratio in cv. Elsanta.
