Abstract:
Bearing in mind the importance of pepper as a foodstuff, the Center for Agricultural and Technological Research in Zaječar have started a long-term project on collecting local pepper populations.
An exceptionally large and diverse collection has been gathered.
A portion of the collected material has been analyzed, another portion has been studied with the objective of selecting breeding material (lines) for further selection and breeding of new varieties.
The method of individual selection was used.
The yield and yield components of the selected lines were comparable or superior to those of the standard varieties that served for comparison.
Three of the selected lines had elongated fruits, two had semi-elongated fruits.
The former lines were compared against the variety Duga bela, the most widely grown elongated pepper in Yugoslavia.
The latter lines were compared against the variety Mačvanka with semi-elongated fruits.
The lines selected from local populations were found to be superior in respect to the standards in fruit length, width and mass, flesh thickness and yield performance.
Consequently, some of these lines have been included in a breeding program.
The preliminary results are encouraging.
