Abstract:
Potato improvement programs worldwide are undergoing a period of fast change. In order to be successful, breeders must adapt and incorporate suitable techniques, which become available. Until the three decades ago, potato varieties have been developed using traditional methods. The improvements in molecular biology, analytical procedures, instrumentation and computation that have occured during the last decade promise to speed greatly the development of new cultivars. Recent advances in potato breeding includes haploid breeding, viroid, virus and glycoalkaloid detection, somatic hybridization by fusion protoplast techniques, RFLP and related technologies, isozyme analyses, QTL determination, PCR based marker systems. The purpose of this review paper is to discuss some useful techniques in potato improvement programs.
