Abstract:
A lighting system, consists of multiple self-designed 3-wire electric tracks, was developed in this study.
Each electric track is equipped with 10 self-designed light boxes, entitled LEDsets.
Each LEDset is equipped with 4 super-bright blue and 9 super-bright red light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and is designed to used with one tissue culture vessel.
The LEDset can provide downward or sideward light depends on the installation.
The system is easy to adapt with existing multi-layer benches in confined plant growth environment.
During the light period of the photoperiod, the LEDsets provide flexible light depends on the setting of the driver.
The driver provides: 1). The capability of adjusting forward current/voltage of red and blue LEDs separately, leading to the capability of adjusting light intensity and quality (red vs. blue; R/B). 2). The capability of adjusting frequency and duty ratio, thus, leading to the possibility of energy savings and better photosynthetic efficiency.
By adjusting duty ratio and frequency, LEDset provides high/low frequency intermittent/pulse light and with 100% duty ratio, LEDset provides continuous light.
The LEDset can provide at least 120 μmolm-2s-1 of light at 10 cm distance given 20 mA working current to each LED.
The lighting system developed is flexible and can be used for plant related research and young plant production.
