EFFECT OF OXYGEN AND CARBON DIOXIDE CONCENTRATION IN THE ROOT ZONE ON THE GROWTH OF VEGETABLES

Authors:   M.A. Nichols, D.J. Woolley, C.B. Christie
Keywords:   root zone, oxygen, carbon dioxide, growth
Abstract:
Aeroponics offers the opportunity to modify the root environment more than any other technology. This study modified the gas composition in the root environment in two experiments (with cucumber and tomato) carried out between November 2000 – Febr uary 2001.
In the first experiment the effect of oxygen composition (from 5%-80%) in the root environment on the growth of young seedlings was examined using growth analysis, In the second experiment the effect of carbon dioxide composition (from 2.5%-40%) in the root environment on plant growth was determined, again using growth analysis.
The results from these studies are presented and the practical implications discussed.
