Abstract:
The amount of total water in leaves is an indicator of water regime in plums.
Five plum cultivars with different ripening time planted at three different locations in eastern Serbia were studied.
The values for a number of parameters studied were extreme for this region.
Thus, the year of 1999 was particularly rainy with the precipitation of 679.6, 629.4 and 658.9 mm per location.
The following year was specifically dry with the precipitation of 285.2, 303.3 and 337.4 mm per location.
At the end of each month, (from April till October), the leaves of all three cultivars from the three locations were sampled.
The amount of total water was determined by drying at 105ºC to the constant weight.
The results revealed the dependance of the amount of total water on precipitation, air temperature, location and cultivar.
The amount of water was higher at all the locations in the first year.
On average, the amount of total water was 70.1% (77.3% in April to 66.4% in October) at the first location.
As for the second location, it amounted to 69.2% (from 73.0% to 68.2%), whereas at the third one, it was 68.85% (from 74.4 to 66.5%). In the following year, i.e. in the second year, the amount of total water per cultivar was also significant.
