Abstract:
There is stable tendency to decreasing of the plum areas and production from 70s, around three and four times respectively.
It may be observed a process of slight increasing of the areas after 90s, but the production is fluctuating and the trend of decreasing is not overcome yet and Bulgaria is among the main producer countries in Europe.
The average year’s margins between wholesale price and retail price from 1995 to 1998 are high - up to 61%. Only few large producers can influence on the market prices.
They are unorganized although the state is accepted law frame for creating of producer’s organizations.
Bulgaria exports only 1,6 – 1,8 thousand tons fresh plums annually in the last years, but the plums are one of the most competitive fruits.
From 1998 the trade regime is liberated but Bulgaria do not fulfill export quotas.
The native producers can not still be competitive with the European producers.
The main factors for the development of plum production in Bulgaria are: creating of producer’s organizations; building of contemporary market structures for fruits trade; increasing the state and European support for farmers; investment support; technological support through encouragement of the research work; initiate the export grants for export stimulating.
