Abstract:
For almost half a century many local wild plum varieties have been investigated at the Apricot Research Station, Silistra, with the purpose of using them as rootstocks for apricot.
Over 50 forms and cultivars have been studied.
The best ones have been tried in a nursery and plantation, with the results showing that the wild plum can be a good rootstock for apricot if compatible forms are found. ‘Dzhanka 4’ was recognized by the State Cultivar Commission as early as 1978 as a rootstock for apricot cultivars and later it was included in the National Varieties List. ‘Dzhanka 4’ seedlings has uniform growth, which is imparted on the grafted trees in the plantation.
It has good accretion with apricot cultivars.
There have been no sings of incompatibility with the grafted apricot cultivars for 30 years.
The fact that the rootstock induces vigorous growth on the grafted trees may be considered as a disadvantage.
There is a current recognition procedure of the seed wild plum rootstock ‘Aydemirska’ by the Patent Department.
The main characteristic trait of this rootstock, which makes it better than ‘Dzhanka 4’, is that it gives very good results in the production of rootstock and grafting material in a nursery.
It has high percentage of stone germination.
The seedlings have thick smooth stems, easy for grafting.
The two rootstocks are suitable for high grafting. ‘Dzhanka 4’ and ‘Aydemirska’ are equally good for both heavier and wet, as well as lighter soils.
