ISHS Acta Horticulturae 577: VII International Symposium on Plum and Prune Genetics, Breeding and Pomology

BEHAVIOR OF THREE FORMS OF KYUSTENDILSKA SINYA (PRUNUS DOMESTICA L.) UNDER THE CONDITIONS OF NATURAL INFECTION WITH SHARKA DISEASE (PPV)

Authors:   P. Iliev, A. Stoev
Keywords:   plum pox virus /PPV/, sharka, resistant, tolerant
Abstract:
Data are presented about three forms of cultivar type ‘Kyustendilska sinya’ (Prunus domestica L.): ‘Besztercei BT 2’, ‘Besztercei MM 116’ and ‘Besztercei MM 122’. The trees are introduced from Hungary in 1983 and planted in the plum-tree research field near the town of Dryanovo under conditions, which permit natural infection with the plum pox virus (sharka virus).
Annual examinations are performed in the period from 1987 to 1998 to establish the symptoms of plum pox (sharka) disease. The pathogen is detected through ELISA. The comparison between PPV infected trees on the base of pathological symptoms and damages show that ‘Besztercei MM 122’ is suitable for regions where the sharka disease is widespread, because the event of the infection occurs during the fruit yielding period and the losses from discarded fruits are only 4,6% of the average biological yield.
