EVALUATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF PLUM GENETIC RESOURCES IN SWEDEN AND LATVIA

Abstract:
Department of Horticultural Plant Breeding (Balsgard), Sweden, and Dobele Horticultural Plant Breeding Experimental Station (HPBES), Latvia hold wide and valuable fruit crop genetic resources collections, including 192 (Balsgard) and 141 (Dobele) accessions of plums, which are used in research and breeding. The constitution of plum genetic resources core collections in Sweden and Latvia, which are safety collections for each other, was very important for the future preservation and sustainable usage of genetic resources.
18 morphological, phenological and fruit quality traits of 207 plum varieties and 99 superior selections derived from P. domestica, P. cerasifera, P. salicina (including ssp. ussuriensis), P. simonii, P. americana, P. spinosa and P. brigantiaca, constituting the plum Genetic Resources (GR) collections in Sweden and Latvia, were evaluated using principal component analysis (PCA).
Principal component analysis showed discernible phenotypical aggregation in both germplasm collections. Accessions formed quite distinguishable groups, according to crop type: domestic plums, gages, yellow egg plums and prunes, diploid plums, Eurasia plums, and plums with another ploidity. These morphologically different groups were used as the source for creation of a core collection for plums, to be duplicated in both countries. PCA was also used to identify the most useful characters for germplasm grouping.
