ISHS Acta Horticulturae 577: VII International Symposium on Plum and Prune Genetics, Breeding and Pomology

INTERSPECIFIC HYBRIDS OF THE PRUNUS GENUS BRED AT RIMSA, TROYAN

Keywords:   interspecific hybrids, blackthorn Prunus spinosa, myrobalan Prunus cerasifera, Prunus domestica, plum pox
Abstract:
A total of 754 interspecific hybrids obtained from five hybrid families were studied. In four of them the mother plant was blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) and in one myro-balan (Prunus cerasifera). The male parents used were representatives of Prunus cerasifera, Prunus spinosa and Prunus domestica. The growth performance and some morphological and biological characters of the generations were examined. All the plants studied featured strong growth potential and their trunk girth and crown volume considerably exceeded those of blackthorn (P. spinosa). Due to their complex origins the hybrids generally featured lower fruit-bearing capacity with few excep-tions giving considerably high fruit yield. The fruits of the trees in all combinations had blue coloured skin. In the majority of instances their mass was considerably greater than of the blackthorn fruits. Also, they contained higher levels of tannins and acids. Concerning the ripening time, however, they came close to those of black-thorn. During the trial period no damage was found in the hybrids caused by the economically important plum diseases including plum pox on leaves and fruit. Seventeen promising hybrids were selected. Due to their fruit-bearing capacity and specific traits as well as the disease resistance they are interesting as original hybrids for breeding work. Of greater importance among them are hybrids 55/4, 60/10, 56/11, 87/5, 87/6, 10/4 and 16/12.
