ISHS Acta Horticulturae 577: VII International Symposium on Plum and Prune Genetics, Breeding and Pomology

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TREE SIZE AND INTENSITY OF FLOWERING AND FRUITING OF PLUM SEEDLINGS (PRUNUS DOMESTICA L.)

Author:   T. Jakubowski
Keywords:   European plum, seedlings, size, flower set, fruit set, correlation
Abstract:
European plum seedlings (Prunus domestica L.) obtained from 22 cross combinations were planted in a selection field in the spring of 1997. In 2000, the fourth growing season, diameter of tree trunks was measured and the intensity of flowering and fruiting was evaluated on a ranking scale 1-9. Of the total number of 769 seedlings, 78.5% flowered and 51.6% set fruit.
The preliminary results showed that in the majority of cross combinations the intensity of flowering and fruiting was slightly but positively correlated with tree size expressed as the trunk cross-sectional area.
