Abstract:
The influence of four seedling rootstocks P. cerasifera var. divaricata Borkh., ‘Wangenheim Prune’ (P. domestica L.), 'Erunosid' (P. domestica L.) and 'Wala' (P. domestica L.) on the growth, yield and fruit weight of 'Herman', 'Cacanska Rana' and 'Oneida' plum trees was investigated.
The field experiment was carried out on heavy loamy soil at the Experimental Station in Lipowa (Southern Poland) from 1996 to 2000. The trees grafted on P. divaricata seedlings were regarded as a control.
In comparison to P. divaricata 'Wala', 'Erunosid and Wangenheim Prune seedlings significantly reduced the growth of ‘Cacanska Rana’ and ‘Oneida’ plum trees.
The dwarfing effect of 'Erunosid' on the growth of 'Herman' plum trees was not as evident as that of 'Wala' and Wangenheim Prune.
Cumulative yields of ‘Herman’ and ‘Oneida’ plums were affected by the rootstocks.
The trees grafted on P. divaricata seedlings had higher yields than those on other rootstocks tested.
Yield efficiencies were similar for all of the 'Herman' and 'Oneida' trees.
Yield efficiencies for trees of 'Cacanska Rana' grafted on Wangenheim Prune and 'Wala' seedlings were higher than for those on P. divaricata and 'Erunosid'. 'Herman' and 'Cacanska Rana' plum trees grafted on P. divaricata seedlings produced larger fruits than trees on the other rootstocks.
In the case of 'Oneida' the reverse was true.
The trees grafted on P. divaricata had smaller fruits than those on 'Wala' and 'Erunosid'.
