THE EFFECT OF BUDDING HEIGHT IN WANGENHEIM PRUNE SEEDLINGS USED AS ROOTSTOCK ON FIEL PERFORMANCE OF TWO PLUM CULTIVARS

Authors:   Z.S. Grzyb, M. Sitarek, B. Kozinski
Keywords:   Plum, Wangenheim Prune seedling, budding height, cultivar, growth, yield, fruit quality
Abstract:
The influence of budding height in Wangenheim Prune seedlings on the growth, yield and fruit quality of ‘Amers’ and ‘Bluefre’ plum trees was investigated. In a nursery maidens were budded at 10, 20 and 30 cm above ground level. The field experiment was carried out in an orchard for five consecutive years.
The growth of plum trees was affected by the budding height. ‘Amers’ trees budded at 10 cm above the ground were bigger than those budded at 20 and 30 cm. ‘Bluefre’ trees budded at 30 cm grew poorer than those budded at 10 and 20 cm. As a result Of budding higher the total length of one-year-old shoots for the period 1997-2000 was reduced.
No significant effect of the budding height on the cumulative yield, yield efficiency, mean fruit weight and the amount of soluble solids in fruits was found.
