PREHARVEST MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS THAT MEET THE NEEDS OF THE NEW MARKETPLACE

Author:   M.F. Piccone
Keywords:   Marketplace, food safety, environment, management, efficiency, preharvest, buyers, customers
Abstract:
The new marketplace in its many forms is dynamic, challenging and demanding. Horticultural producers operate in an environment of increasing real costs and often decreasing financial margins. Coupled with this are rapidly evolving legislative and customer requirements including the production of safe products, guaranteed supply, compliance with quality specifications and price competitiveness. The challenges and complexities faced by horticultural managers have escalated. Business viability in today’s horticultural industries requires preharvest management systems that are holistic, integrated and market driven. Other key operators in horticultural industries such as industry leaders, researchers, extensionists and consultants must also operate within the same parameters if horticulture is to remain competitive and meets the stringent requirements of target markets.
