GROWTH RESPONSE OF 'WOODARD' RABBITEYE BLUEBERRY TO HIGH RATES OF MACRONUTRIENTS

Author:   T. Tamada
Abstract:
The growth response of 'Woodard' rabbiteye blueberry to high rates of macronutrients was studied. The treatments consisted of a control treatment (N=24, P=30, K=40, Ca=40 and Mg=24 ppm of each element), for comparison with 12 treatment combinations: N+P, N+K, N+P+K, N+Ca, N+Mg, P+K, P+Ca, P+Mg, K+Ca, K+Mg, K+Ca+Mg or Ca+Mg which were applied at five times the rate of each nutrient in the control.
Top and root growth were best in the N+Mg treatment, and were poorest with the N+P and N+Ca treatments. For other treatments, growth of the top and roots ranked in between. Symptoms of chlorosis and necrosis appeared on leaves of the N+P, N+K, N+Ca, P+K and P+Ca treatments. As the rate of each macronutrient was increased over the control treatment, leaf concentration of that element increased, compared to the control. However, this increase often caused another mineral element to decrease. Interaction of one element with another and the resultant imbalance between elements were observed.
