ISHS Acta Horticulturae 574: VII International Symposium on Vaccinium Culture

REVIEW OF SOME EXPERIMENTS WITH HIGHBUSH BLUEBERRY AT THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF POMOLOGY AND FLORICULTURE, SKIERNIEWICE, POLAND

Authors:   K. Smolarz, D. Chlebowska
Keywords:   Highbush blueberry, cultivars, fertilization, pruning
Abstract:
In Poland first commercial plantings of highbush blueberries were set in the seventies. At that time our knowledge of requirements of this species was limited, based mainly on literature and personal communications with scientists from the USA. Simultaneously, research on this subject began at the Research Institute of Pomology and Floriculture at Skierniewice. According to our results, the best varieties appeared to be Bluecrop. Weymouth, Earliblue, Darrow, Jersey and Coville, followed by Patriot, Spartan, Bluetta, Duke, Puru, Bluegold and Nelson.
The experiments on fertilization showed that highbush blueberry is very sensitive to nitrogen deficiency, but N should not be given in high doses. P and K requirements are low. Heavy pruning is advisable, resulting in abundant, regular yields of high quality fruit. At present, the following investigations are being conducted: differentiated nitrogen fertilization of cv Bluecrop at different planting distances, rejuvenating pruning, mulching with sawdust and bark, and comparison of methods of soil preparation before planting.
