This workshop was organised by Plant Research International (Wageningen) and Applied Plant Research Lelystad) under the flag of the International Society of Horticultural Science (ISHS).
There were 50 participants from 22 countries in Europe, Africa, Oceania, Latin America and North America.

· Use of inorganic and organic fertilisers
· Decision support systems and modelling

This special issue contains the written versions of the presentations, providing an overview of the current state of the art on judicious fertilisation of field vegetables.
On behalf of the organisers of the workshop I wish to thank the contributors for their presentations and preparation of the manuscripts.
I am also grateful to the reviewers of the manuscripts.
They are highly commended for their contribution to the scientific standard of this issue.
