PREFACE OF THE EDITORS
South Africa, the origin of myriad bulbs known to floriculture, is a fitting place to have held the VIIIth Symposium on Flowerbulbs. The symposium was held in the conference facilities of Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, enabling a visit to the collection of bulbs maintained by the garden. Participants from across the globe convened and enjoyed not only excellent discussions, but also pleasant social occasions.
Research in flowerbulbs is dealt with in five sections, each covering an important topic. The papers are listed according to the session and divided between oral presentations and poster presentations. All papers were reviewed by two referees, and amended according to their suggestions prior to publication.
Gratefully we acknowledge the contribution made by the Organizing Committee, who dedicated many hours to the planning and organizing of the Symposium. The Scientific Committee spent many hours reviewing abstracts and papers, for which they are gratefully thanked. We hope that the fruits of the efforts will provide useful information for those involved in flowerbulbs.

PREFACE
This volume of Acta Horticulturae is the Proceedings of the 8th International Symposium on Flowerbulbs.
Invited and keynote speakers and selected authors of offered oral papers and posters had the opportunity to submit their manuscripts for publication in this volume of the series Acta Horticulturae.
Submitted manuscripts were reviewed by the Editors and amended according to the referee suggestions prior to acceptance.
The ISHS acknowledges the cooperation received from the Editors on reviewing the manuscripts which was a significant contribution to the overall quality of the publication.
