Abstract:
Pollination studies revealed self-incompatibility in Dashehari, Chausa and Langra cultivars of mango.
Dashehari was cross-incompatible with Chausa and Safeda Malihabad, and Chausa with Bombay Green and Rataul.
Langra appeared to be cross-incompatible with Dashehari, Safeda Malihabad, Bombay Green, Chausa, Fazri, Surkha Verma, Rataul, Safeda Lucknow and Totapari.
Langra, Rataul and Bombay Green were compatible pollinizers for Dashehari, whereas Langra and Safeda Malihabad for Chausa.
Among these, Bombay Green and Dashehari proved to be the best pollinizers for Dashehari and Chausa, respectively.
Anatomical studies of the pollinated ovaries revealed that fertilization took place in selfed and crossed ovaries between 48–72 h after pollination.
However, degeneration of endosperm and zygote nuclei in selfed fruitlets started between 15–20 days after pollination and fruitlets dropped there after.
Cross-incompatible crosses gave similar results.
Compatible crosses developed normal endosperm and embryo resulting into mature fruits.
