ISHS Acta Horticulturae 57: I International Symposium on Tropical and Subtropical Fruits

EFFECT OF FURROW IRRIGATION ON THE GROWTH AND PRODUCTION OF THE FIRST SUCKER OF THE GIANT CAVENDISH BANANA VARIETY NANICÃO

Authors:   I. Manica, A.R. Condé, S. Simão, R. Scardua, O.C. Koller, F. Agronomia
Abstract:
Experimental plots were irrigated when soil moisture levels reached 75, 50 and 25%. These treatments were compared with non-irrigated control plots. Leaf number and pseudostem diameter at flowering and harvest increased from a minimum with no irrigation to a maximum with irrigation at 75 %. Bunch weight, hands and fingers per bunch, and fruit production per hectare increased in a similar manner. Leaf number at harvest showed quadratic responses to soil moisture content. Banana production per hectare was 60.8,56.0, 49.7 and 46.1 tons for treatments 75, 50, 25 and control, respectively.
