Abstract:
- Production of Medicinal Plants for Phytotherapy Programs of the Public Health Service: the Experience of Curitiba – PR
In the state of Paraná, several professionals were concerned with the low answer capacity that the public system gives on primary health care.
They were also motivated by the good results of the researches that proved, scientifically, the medicinal effects of many plants used by the population.
They are now looking for an improvement in the population’s attendance using this plants.
Many initiatives appeared.
All of them with the purpose of contributing to the improvement of the population’s attendance in the area of health through the production of phytomedicines using qualified raw material and with proven effectiveness.
Many professionals from several areas, such as medical, pharmaceutical, agronomic, and several others, decided to work together in a multiprofessional team and, in terms of the public sector, sometimes they are also from different institutions (departments). One example of those initiatives, among several developed in the state of Paraná, is the experience of the City Hall of Curitiba (PMC). In the beginning of the 80’s, there were many companies in the surrounding area of Curitiba processing medicinal plants but the production was small and without regularity.
In general, the products had low quality.
EMATER-PR (Empresa Paranaense de Assistência Técnica e Extensão Rural do Paraná), an institution responsible for the technical orientation of the agriculture production, introduced a program to improve the cultivation and quality of medicinal, aromatic and spice plants.
There aim was to improve the product’s quality and to increase the market opportunities.
The Health Department of Curitiba (SMS-PMC), started to use the medicinal plants as phytomedicines in 1990. The development of the activities followed several stages, summarized as following: a) complete assessment of the public primary care health system’s needs; b) cultivation of the most easily available species; c) researches to adapt the raw material production technology to the necessary quality and quantity; d) research on the development of the phytomedicines, with quality control in all stages.
Today the Program " VERDE SAÚDE - CURITIBA" (GREEN LIFE – CURITIBA) is consolidated.
The goal, for the year 2000, is to dispense phytomedicines to 90 health centers of the City Hall of Curitiba.
For this reason, the Program is being expanded.
They are increasing the cultivated area owned by the City Hall and purchasing raw material from independent farmers from the neighborhood.
Other necessary inputs are purchased on large scale for cost reduction.
The City Hall also signed agreements with several universities to guarantee the production and the quality of the phytomedicines.
