Abstract:
- Milk Thistle Harvest Prediction through the External Characteristics of the Heads
The milk thistle is a medicinal plant.
The flowering of its numerous heads is dispersed in time and space, so the ripeness is not simultaneous in the whole plant.
This study was carried out in order to develop a visual method to predict the most favorable time to harvest the crop.
At pre-harvest and harvest time, samples of heads were classificated by stage of development.
At harvest time the crop has between 35.06 and 83.2% of Dry heads and heads with dry flowers and green bracts.
When the crop has between 20 and 50% of the heads with Dry Flowers, it is possible to anticipate that the harvest would be done 18 and 14 days after, respectively.
