Abstract:
- Phenotypical Plasticity of the Morphologycal Characters in Accessions of Basil (Ocimum basilicum L.)
Aiming to know the genetic and environmental factors affecting the production of medicinal species, the phenotypic plasticity of morphological traits was studied in three accessions of basil (Ocimum basilicum L.). The accessions “white basil”, “purple basil” and “sweet basil”, which were grown in eight environments constituted by a combination of four fertilizer treatments (without fertilization, organic fertilization, chemical fertilization and the a mix of chemical and organic fertilization) with two levels of water stress (with and without stress). The plasticity was quantified by the intensity of phenotypic variation of the following traits: height, flowering, total dry matter and the total dry matter/total fresh matter ratio. The total dry matter showed the highest plasticity values in the three accessions. The purple basil showed the greatest plasticity magnitudes for the majority of characters, while white basil and sweet basil showed similar plasticity values. It was concluded that the environmental effects on the basil accessions were responsible for the variations of evaluated characters.
