Abstract:
- Production of Medicinal Plants for Phytotherapy Programs in the Public Health in Brazil
The public health services in developing countries have been trying to follow the recommendations of the World Health Organization using their own traditional medicines in primary health care.
In Brazil, today, only 23% of the population have enough buying power to acquire industrialized medicines.
The use of medicinal plants represents a viable option.
The selection of the species that can be used is based on criteria’s like information from scientific research, mainly about safety and effectiveness.
The main objective of this paper is to outline a group of measures necesssary to make phytotherapy programs for primary health care a viable and safe option, with the following steps: 1) collect ethnobotanical information to discover the mainly used species in the area and botanic identification of the plants; 2) review on the bibliography about toxicology and pharmacolgy of these species; 3) when selecting the species, take into account also agronomic and ecological aspects, besides safety and effectiveness; 4) cultivation of the selected species in homegardens or medicinal plant gardens; 5) assembly of a laboratory to prepare the phytomedicines, and finally, 6) use with prescription.
