ISHS Acta Horticulturae 568: X International Symposium on Virus Diseases of Ornamental Plants

PREVIOUSLY UNREPORTED VIRAL DISEASES OF ASTER, HEUCHERA, LOBELIA, PULMONARIA AND PHYSOSTEGIA IN THE USA

Authors:   B.E.L. Lockhart, J. Fetzer, J. Westendrop
Keywords:   Viruses of ornamentals, alfalfa mosaic virus, turnip mosaic virus, tobacco ringspot virus
Abstract:
Previously unreported viral diseases of Aster, Heuchera, Lobelia, Pulmonaria and Physostegia were identified in plants from commercial nurseries in the USA. Symptoms associated with viral infection included stunting, mosaic, necrosis and deformation of leaves and colour-break of flowers. Disease symptoms in Aster were associated with infection by tobacco ringspot (TRSV), in Heuchera with infection by turnip mosaic virus (TuMV), in Lobelia with infection by TuMV and cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) and in Physostegia with infection by alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV). The viruses were identified by particle morphology, immunological assays and indicator plant reaction. This is apparently the first report of viral disease occurrence in Heuchera, Pulmonaria and Physostegia, and the first reports of TRSV occurrence in Aster, and of TuMV infection in Lobelia.
