ISHS Acta Horticulturae 567: IV International Strawberry Symposium

THE EFFECT OF NUTRITION PRIOR TO AND DURING FLOWER DIFFERENTIATION ON PHYLLODY AND PLANT PERFORMANCE OF SHORT DAY STRAWBERRY ELSANTA

Author:   P. Lieten
Keywords:   nutrition, differentiation period, phyllody, Fragaria x ananassa
Abstract:
Withholding nutrition during the flower initiation period and the onset of the differentiation period could increase the flower number of the short day strawberry variety Elsanta. The primary flower of the first inflorescence was more likely to develop phyllody if nutrient supply was limited in September. Withholding a complete nutrient solution until September or longer reduced crown diameter, length of inflorescences and petioles, leaf number, flower number and yield significanly but improved fruit weight and fruit set. Withholding nutrition after September reduced crown diameter and fruit number significantly.
