Abstract:
The effect of the photoperiod and gibberellic acid (GA3), on pollen germination and deformation and stamen length was studied in young strawberry (cv. Seascape) plants in two experiments. In Exp. 1, plants were sprayed with GA3 at 50 or 200 mgL-1, in the middle of December and then grown under natural early spring light conditions in an unheated greenhouse. In Exp. 2, plants were treated with GA3 as above and then were subject to either short day (SD) or long day (LD) regimes. Three months after spraying, when flowering occurred, flowers and pollen from all treatments were collected and tested. In Exp. 1, GA3 at 50 mgL-1 increased pollen germination and decreased the incidence of deformed pollen grains, compared to controls. In contrast, GA3 at 200 mgL-1 decreased pollen germination without affecting the formation of deformed pollen grains. Control plants of Exp. 2 subject to LDs had a significantly enhanced rate of pollen germination compared to those in SDs. GA3 at 200 mgL-1 caused a significant decrease in pollen germination under either SD or LD conditions compared to the controls. Under SD conditions, 200 mgL-1 GA3 doubled the percentage of deformed pollen grains. Stamen filaments of control plants grew four times longer under LD (8.7 mm) than SD conditions (2.2 mm). GA3 at 200 mgL-1 did not affect stamen length under LDs (8.9 mm) but increased it significantly under SDs to levels comparable to those in LDs (7.7 mm). No correlation was observed between stamen length and percentages of pollen germination and deformed pollen grains.
