Abstract:
The strawberry industry in Estonia has expanded almost three times during the last five years.
The need for new varieties adapted to Estonian climatic conditions is a major problem for strawberry production in Estonia.
Therefore, at the Polli Horticultural Institute new varieties, from several breeding programmes in Europe, USA and Canada, are being tested in order to fill in the cultivar gap.
Winter hardiness is an important characteristic.
In the programme, we evaluate cultivars for yield, resistance to main pests and diseases, fruit size, firmness and taste.
The list of cultivars recommended for growing in Estonia in 2000 include the following cultivars: ‘Bounty’, ‘Honeoye’, ‘Jonsok’, ‘Festivalnaja’, ‘Ostara’, ‘Pocahontas’, ‘Redgauntlet’, ‘Senga Sengana’ and ‘Venta’. The main cultivars are ‘Senga Sengana’ and ‘Jonsok’. Two North American cultivars, the early ripening ‘Honeoye’ and the late ripening ‘Bounty’ , came into the “list” in 1998. The newest promising cultivars in our last trials are Canadian cultivar ‘Kent’ and Dutch cultivar ‘Polka’, with good yield and fruit firmness.
