Abstract:
The national strawberry breeding programme has as its main purpose to breed cultivars with high yielding capacity, large fruit size for fresh-market, easy picking and high fruit quality.
The new varieties to be obtained must have a harvest calendar appropriate for the economic interests of the farmers of the different regions where strawberry are cultivated.
In the East, they look for medium-late cultivars while in the South they prefer early-type cultivars.
The results in the last three years led us to choose an advanced selection as a new short-day cultivar registered as Carisma.
Production of Carisma was higher than that of most of the controls (Pajaro, Seascape, Vilanova, Chandler, and Camarosa). Marketable yield of Carisma varies between 750 and 900 g/plant and its average first quality fruit weight is between 17.5 and 20 g/fruit when cultivated with cold stored plants in the area of Valencia.
When planted in the same area in fall, using fresh plants coming from a high elevation nursery, its marketable yield is around 650 g/plant and its average fruit weight varies between 20 and 25 g/fruit.
Carisma shows a good adaptation to the environmental conditions of the Huelva area, too.
Its marketable yield range is 700-900 g/plant and its average first quality fruit weight varies between 25 and 27 g/fruit.
Carisma is a vigorous new cultivar and it shows a good behaviour in high elevation nurseries.
It is a highly productive variety and its fruit is large and attractive in appearance with a good firmness.
It has good flavour.
